A handmade pen?  That’s the reaction that I had when my 12 year old son came home from school with a couple of handcrafted ballpoint slimline pens that he had made in his shop class.

It was a beautiful ballpoint slimline pen with 24 karat gold hardware.  It looked to me like a ballpoint pen he had purchased from one of the most highly acclaimed department stores where you buy gifts for one of your favorite friends or relatives.

So I asked him what this was all about.  He began to tell me that the wood shop teacher had been showing them the wonderful art of making hand crafted ballpoint pens.  Interestingly enough, the tools required to make a handmade pen are not overwhelming.  Basically, you need a good drill press, small disk sander, a mini-lathe and a press.

After that, it’s a matter of choosing the desired woods or acrylics that you would like to use as base materials.  You can also choose a variety of hardware from which to make your handmade pen.  Just to name a few of the base materials of which some of our pens are made, are Amboyna Burl, Bethlehem Olivewood, Bloodwood and Zebra wood.  For a complete list of all the woods you can choose click here.

As for the variety of handcrafted pens, you can choose from the following:

• Gastsby – A handcrafted single barrel pen with a twist mechanism. This pen is slightly larger around than most slimline ballpoint pens.  The part towards the tip is usually black plastic.  This black compliments any wood or acrylic you might use. This pen is also available in a rhodium plating for Gatsby pencils. These pencils accept 0.7 mm lead.

• Big Ben - This handmade ballpoint pen is powerfully built for those who appreciate a larger pen to use. It is complimented by its black accents that segment with its rugged, yet sophisticated design. This ballpoint pen accepts Parker ballpoint and gel refills.

• Slimline - These are handcrafted ballpoint slimline pens. It is a good choice for those who like to hold a thinner pen. This pen is available in many plating options, such as 24kt gold, satin gold, copper, silver and silver fancy, and many more. This pen accepts a cross- style refill. This style is also available in a pencil, in many of the plating options that the slimline pen has. These pencils accept 0.7 mm lead. • Rollerball - Our rollerball pens feature a cap that is able to “post” on the back of the pen while in use. They are available in satin and 24kt gold finishes. This pen style accepts premium rollerball refills.

• Fountain - Our handmade fountain pens feature a cap that is able to “post” on the back of the pen while in use. The nib is plated with iridium and is made in Germany. This pen will accept any liquid fountain pen ink. The hardware is available in gold and satin finishes.
